How To Clean Window Blinds and Shades

Keeping your new window blinds clean is easy and will ensure that they look fresh and function properly for a many years. If you received specific cleaning instructions with your blinds, be sure to follow them. Here we list simple do’s and don’ts for keeping your blinds clean.

Wood Blinds
- As with any wood product, excess moisture can warp or discolor the wood, even though the wood is sealed.
- Use a clean soft dust cloth, feather duster, or vacuum brush to wipe off dust.
- DO NOT wash.
- Lemon oil or other wood preservatives are often permitted to maintain wood’s natural luster. Read the manufacturer’s guidelines before applying these or any products to your wood blinds.
Faux Wood Blinds
- Part of the beauty of faux wood blinds is its ease of cleaning.
- Use a clean soft dust cloth, feather duster, or vacuum brush to wipe off dust.
- Spot clean tough stains: use a mild detergent with warm water on a slightly damp cloth, then blot dry.
Cellular Shades
- Most cellular shades are static-resistant, which means they don’t attract much dust.
- Gently remove dust with a vacuum brush attachment or feather duster. (A feather duster often sends the dust into the air, so you may prefer a vacuum brush).
- Spot clean tough stains: use a mild detergent with warm water on a slightly damp cloth, then blot dry.
- DO NOT use spot removers or other commercial cleaners.
- DO NOT Dry Clean.
- Blackout Cellular Shades require special handling (see below).
Woven Wood Shades

Venetian Blinds
- Dust regularly with a vacuum cleaner brush or a clean, soft cloth.
Vinyl Blinds
- Dust regularly with a vacuum cleaner brush or a clean, soft cloth.
- Spot clean stains: sponge with a mild detergent in warm (not hot) water, then blot dry.
Aluminum Mini Blinds
- Aluminum blinds are smooth and therefore quite easy to clean.
- Use soft clean dust cloths, chemically treated dust clothes, a vacuum cleaner brush, feather duster or other common, gentle cleaning aid for dusting.
- To dust: Tilt slats up, then down (but not so the blinds are fully closed), then clean with the cloth or vacuum brush. Clean from side to side, following the direction of the slats.
- To wash your blinds: use a mild detergent on a sponge or damp cloth dipped in warm (not hot) water. In most cases, you may remove your blinds and place them in a bathtub filled with mild, soapy water. Rinse then wipe dry (or leave open to air-dry).Vertical Blinds
Vinyl Vertical Blinds
- Dust regularly with a vacuum cleaner brush or a clean, soft cloth.
- Generally, vinyl louvers may be immersed in water for cleaning.
- Spot clean stains: use a mild detergent in warm (not hot) water, then blot dry.
Fabric Vertical Blinds
- Dust regularly with a vacuum cleaner brush or a clean, soft cloth.
- Spot clean stains: use a mild detergent in warm (not hot) water, then blot dry.
- DO NOT dry clean or immerse fabric louvers in water.
