How to Measure for Window Blinds

Measuring is the most important step in ordering your custom blinds and shades. If you submit incorrect measurements, your blinds will not be returnable or refunded. In some cases, we can resize your blinds for a fee, but by following our instructions, and contacting us with any questions, your blinds will fit perfectly and function properly.

Before you measure

  • Read and understand our Return Policy regarding measurements.
  • Determine if you want an INSIDE or OUTSIDE mount before you measure.
  • Always use a metal tape measure – never cloth. We do not recommend using rulers or yardsticks either.
  • Measure to the nearest 1/8".
  • Always measure the exact window intended for each treatment. Windows may appear to be the same size, but can vary slightly.
  • NEVER measure existing blinds or use their specifications (from their packaging, invoices, or shipping materials) as the basis for your new blinds.
  • Record your measurements WIDTH HEIGHT, in this order. All purchases, over the phone and online, require the measurements to be given in order of Width then Height. The #1 mistake customers often make is to reverse these measurements (which results in your blinds/shades not fitting). We are not responsible for measurements recorded or conveyed to us incorrectly.
  • Follow the measuring instructions specific to your blinds. There are different instructions for horizontal vs. vertical blinds/shades and inside vs. outside mounts.
  • If you have any questions about measuring, call us (1-888-404-8000) or email us.

Inside vs. Outside Mount

No matter what type of blind or shade you have, you will need to choose between an inside and outside mount before you measure for your new blinds/shades. The measurements for inside and outside mounts are different. Choosing between the inside and outside mount is a matter of preference and does not depend on the type of shade or blind you’ve selected.

Inside Mount

The mount (the hardware supporting the shade/blind) sits in the opening of the window’s frame, allowing the shade or blind to look flush or nearly flush with the frame or walls. This creates a "cleaner" look and allows you to see the natural beauty of the window frame.

Outside Mount

The mounting brackets sit outside or on top of the window frame. With this mount, the shades or blinds cover the window frame as well as the window. The outside mount is often chosen to hide an unattractive window or create the illusion of a larger window.

Measuring Instructions

Not all windows are measured the same. There are 4 sets of instructions, depending on whether your blinds/shades are horizontal or vertical, and whether you’ve chosen an inside or outside mount.

Horizontal Blinds (and shades) include: Wood blinds, Faux Wood blinds, Cellular shades, Woven Wood blinds, Venetian blinds, Aluminum blinds, Vinyl blinds and Roller shades. There are different measuring instructions for inside and outside mounted horizontal blinds:

Vertical Blinds. There are different measuring instructions for inside and outside mounted vertical blinds:
